Christmas was almost magical this year. We actually had a white Christmas. This was both Damien and Dylan's first white Christmas. It may have been mine as well, but I am pretty sure that in all my years living here, I have had one as well. I just can't remember it. (I have the worst memory. I joke with Damien that if there's not a picture of it, I don't remember it.) Nonetheless, it made the holiday more memorable. Also this year, was my brother's little girl's first Christmas. To have those kinds of memories make it more magical.
Leading up to the holiday season, like every year, there was so much talk of Santa. We haven't really decided what we are going to do about Santa with Dylan, but right now, we just play like Santa is a mascot of Christmas. He's a part of the game but not the reason all the fans come to the game. You know what I mean? We haven't said anything like Santa's bringing you presents or Santa's coming to your house....others have said that to him, but we have not. For now, we have decided that Santa is neutral. He doesn't do anything, he just is there. The one thing we did spend lots of time talking about was baby Jesus. We had 2 nativity scenes that we put out for Christmas and then I found a really cute child inspired nativity that I got for Dylan. We talked about who Jesus is, who is mom was, who her husband was, who visited Jesus and the gifts that they brought to him and who told the shepherd that Jesus had been born. He could repeat it all back to me with the exception of the gift of myrrh and he always pronounced frankincense wrong...of course it was frankenstein. I was proud of him for taking an interest in it and understanding it for the most part. I can't wait for him to get older and really understand how important and special it was for Jesus to give up his throne and come to earth as a baby.
This year, our family activities were a little different than normal. Typically, we go to my parents on Christmas eve, but I decided to see if everyone wanted to come to our house for Christmas eve. My parents, my brother (and family) and my grandparents came over to celebrate, eat and open gifts. Of course, PawPaw and Nana spoiled Dylan with lots of new toys. He was not disappointed. He got Yo Gabba Gabba toys, Batman cave and accessories and a dinosaur from "Uncle Blilly"
Saturday, Christmas day, we actually had the entire day at home, in our PJs of course. It was a late morning as Dylan did not wake up until 10:00am and that was after I went up there and woke him up. He was so excited about his train table. He could not decide what he wanted to play with more, the train table or the batman cave he got the night before. We also bought him a power wheels jeep. He didn't show much interest in that though. That was a blessing as it was defective. We took it outside to let Dylan ride it and it only had 2 gears: slow reverse and fast reverse. UGH! However, It was nice to just stay at home and watch Dylan enjoy the day. (Thankfully the store didn't make us return the jeep to the manufacturer like we should have and double thankful for a special friend who called me after reading my posts on FB to offer her power wheels jeep to me for free....we just had to buy a new battery. Thanks KB!!!)
The day after Christmas, we went to my Grandmother's house. We usually go Christmas day, but we had a special guest, my cousin Heather from Oregon, who was going to be in town on Sunday. I have to admit there were so many people at my Grandmother's house, I didn't even know them all. Dylan enjoyed seeing all of his cousins and playing Grandmother's piano.
(for those of you who remember Tyler, that's him on the far right)
I know that next year will be a great Christmas because Dylan will be older and understand more and because we will have our new little one.
