Malawi or Bust

On December 26, 2004, the world grieved those who had been killed, hurt or lost loved ones in the devastating tsunami that hit Sri Lanka and other areas. Our church, The Peoples Church, sprang into action.  The church began briefing people who were interested in going to help those who were in need since they were letting people into the country to help. We had to take advantage of this major opportunity. The goal was to show Jesus' face through our loving kindness to help these people. I was moved, and I felt that I was being called. However, after being briefed, I wasn't quite sure that this should be my first mission trip, as they even said, this isn't good for a first mission.  The conditions were poor, it was rainy season and as a woman I'd only be able to help do laundry and what not.  My heart sank, but I knew that I would have another opportunity.

In December 2007, our church took up a love offering for two charities one of which was the Adziwa Ministry.  As they spoke of this ministry, I felt that tug at my heart, Holy Spirit was whispering to me. The church leaders announced that they would be parterning with Capital City Baptist Church in Lilongwe, Malawi and with African Leadership here in Franklin in order to demonstrate the love of Jesus in practical and varied ways. The first initiative of this partnership is to resource the Kauma Orphan Support Initiative, also known as “Adziwa.” AIDS orphans and the families caring for them are provided decent housing and agricultural projects that give opportunities to earn a steady income. Another aspect of this initiative is the construction of a school, as over half the children of Malawi receive no formal education. This was the opportunity that God had been holding onto for me as I have a huge heart for kids who are affected by AIDS/HIV. I was pregnant at the time of the announcement and I knew there was no way, I would travel during the first year of Dylan's life.  I would wait and see what the following year would look like.

A few months ago, the church's missions pastor, Ken, announced that they were holding a meeting for the Malawi missions. I attended and was so amazed by the stories and pictures that were shared during this meeting. On the way out, I picked up my application and the information including the 3 dates that our church would be going to Malawi this year...one of which was July 11-24.   That date is perfect I thought. My mom, who drives a school bus, would be available to watch Dylan, and he will be 15 months old. I turned in my application, renewed my passport and waited.

I received an email from Richard and Mary, our fearless leaders for the trip, notifying us when our meetings would be for the trip. I am anxious about the first meeting which will be held on March 1.

In the mean time, I ask that your pray for me and the team I will be going with, as I know that there is power in prayers. Personally, I pray for everything to work out so that I can go to Malawi. Also, I am anxious about the pills that I have to take for malaria, so please pray that my anxiety is calmed. As some of you know, I have a fear of choking and cannot swallow pills. I cannot wait to share this journey with you.

Stephanie, I found your blog through my neighbor, Amanda Wimberly's blog, but my dad is Rick White from TPC. Isn't it such a small world? I think we have several mutual TN friends, but I ran across the blog from my new Atlanta friend! I will definitely be praying for you about Malawi. Our family has experienced so many blessings through trips like this one, and dad's heart in particular has been captured by the people of Malawi. Maybe we will eventually run into each other while we are visiting at TPC! Blessings!
